To provide protection against rain and wind and bears!
Refuge, home, escape!
Okay, so, my family owns a wee bit of land (45 acres) a couple of hours northeast of Edmonton, and after my heart was broken this summer, I completely fell in love with it. It will never leave me, will someday be all mine (well, half of it), and it listens to me and makes me feel beautiful.
It also holds natural bounty: saskatoon berries, raspberries, rosehips, hazelnuts, strawberries and many a mushroom (though my knowledge on that front is nil, and I would likely die if I tried to make them a part of my diet). There is also plentiful birch bark for writing on, the occasional deer if things got really grim, and enough deadfall to sustain campfires for the rest of my life.
This is what I (and my father, perhaps with my mother) shall build:
Though I’m leaning more towards the doors being on the longer side:
8′ X 12′ of wonderful. With eaves and rainbarrels to collect the rain for the fires, of course. And a plan involving aluminum poles and tarps for outdoor cooking/eating and relieving areas. I am clever and handy and I will build a fort.
